In July 2005 my brother Ken and his son Derek joined me for several weeks in the Solu Khumbu region of central Nepal. We hiked from the village of Lukla, where a small propeller plane had deposited us from Kathmandu, into the heart of Sherpa country. On this trip, led by a Kathmandu mountain guiding service arranged through REI Adventures, we trekked through the valleys that drain the southern slopes of Mount Everest. We climbed to the top of Kala Pathar, an 18,000-ft. satellite of Everest, and hiked up to Everest Base Camp. The mountain scenery was gorgeous.
During our trek, I became impressed with the hardworking Sherpa who did so much to make our trip a success. And I made some good friends among the others in our group -- Todd, Bobbi, Judy, John, and Mizuho. I can't wait to return to Nepal and see how Thubten, our trip leader, and his children are doing. Here are links to my journal and photographs from the trip.
