I flew to El Paso and then drove east into the desert to find the highest peak in Texas, Guadalupe Peak El Capitan, the lower neighboring peak, is more impressive -- but its crumbling limestone cliffs make it off limits for climbing. The trail to the top of Guadalupe Peak is steadily uphill, and the views grow increasingly more impressive with height. It is possible to see White Sands, NM from high on Guadalupe Peak. In recent years, pollution has begun to drift northward from south of the US border, obstructing the full impact of views to the south of the peak. Guadalupe Peak was my first State highpoint.
